Miami-Dade County Florida - Location
Miami-Dade County is located south of Broward County on the southeastern tip of Florida. The county borders the Atlantic Ocean for a good portion of its eastern and southern borders. The county covers 2,431 square miles, of which 20% is water - mostly comprised of Biscayne Bay.
Miami is located on Biscayne Bay, and separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the barrier islands along the coast. Interestingly, the Florida Keys can only be accessed from Miami-Dade County, but the Keys are actually part of neighboring Monroe County.
Miami-Dade County History
The county was created in 1836, and was originally named Dade County. It was named after Major Francis Dade, a soldier in the Second Seminole War in the 1830’s. The name was changed to Miami-Dade County in 1997.

Things to Do in Miami-Dade County
The Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition is a great annual family event. The fair is rated as one of the top 20 in North America. It typically consists of 80 acres packed with exhibits, rides, food, games, shopping and live entertainment.
The Everglades National Park offers visitors an opportunity to walk, canoe and camp in the everglades. The Park is home to 14 rare and endangered species, and a large portion of the Park is so primitive that only researchers usually travel that area.
Miami, of course, provides a wide range of activities for every taste. South Beach is an area of Miami well known for excellent shopping and fascinating nightlife. For the kids, a visit to the Miami Children’s Museum is a must. The interactive exhibits will keep children of all ages happy.
